24 February is Mátyás the Icebreaker Day. We, too, are looking forward to this special day with great excitement! 24–25 February- At Katica Farm, we’ll be weaving nets, „making” pike and catching them, but we’ll also be playing an icebreaker game!
What is this Special Day all about?
24 February is the feast day of Saint Matthias the Apostle. The name means ‘God’s gift’. Matthew, who came from Bethlehem, was a learned man and one of the Lord’s disciples. 24 February is also known as ‘Matthew the Ice-Breaker’s Day’. There are several folk beliefs associated with this day. Who hasn’t heard the saying: ‘If Matthias finds ice, he breaks it; if not, he makes some.’ In other words, if it’s freezing on this day, a thaw will follow; if the weather is fine, we can certainly expect further cold spells.
Furthermore, according to folk tradition, on this day the apostle also hands out whistles to the birds so that they may sing once more; from this point on, we can look forward to spring with confidence.
