And this is where Negró’s story begins...

Shortly after the letter arrived, the little dog turned up too, in all the splendour of his completely unkempt coat, with his usual charm and friendly nature. He had no problem with people, but he terrified our pets (especially Samura and Zelma) several times a day, as he has herding blood running through his veins. This situation couldn’t go on for much longer, so we set about finding him a new owner.

We asked around far and wide, tried our luck with our guests, but nobody wanted this super-cute, yet rather scruffy-looking canine companion ☹. We were on the verge of giving up under the weight of our failure when the promise of a better life arrived in the form of Petra, one of our summer student staff members. Although a little apprehensive (she’d never had a dog before), she took her new canine companion home full of hope. 

He was given the name Negro. A bit of grooming, a visit to the vet, and a million times the love – that’s what did it for him:
